CANADA BETS ON AMBITION

Climate Minister McKenna supports limiting warming to 1. 5 °C

In a somersault of ambition which has surprised many, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, now at the Paris climate conference,,is supporting the goal of limiting increased warming to 1,5 °C. In doing so, she joins a hundred countries that are particularly vulnerable to climate change who are demanding this limitation, rather than the previously agreed 2.°C, as a chief objective in the struggle against climate change. Attainment of a 1,5 °C limit would nonetheless require eliminating global CO2 emssionsby 2050, which would signify a dead stop of exsiting petroleum projects in Canada.

The countries asking for a lower limit argue that the 2.°C goal, currently the basis for negotiation toward a climate agreement, would still expose more than a billion people to a catastrophic rise in sea levels as well as to extreme climate events, among other disasteers.
