Letter to the Financial Times
Can we really not accept one or two privations?

From Antony Black, Dundee, UK, April 10 2020

So, Janan Ganesh, you (like I am sure most others) think “the travel industry” will rebound “at a ferocious rate”, and that you “will board a plane” (“The lost belle époque of the restaurant”, Life & Arts, April 4). If we can accept a lockdown for a virus which, like all living things, will be here today and gone tomorrow, can we not accept one or two privations to prevent catastrophic climate change, which will, within 100 years, kill many more people and can never be reversed? We might ban all unnecessary flights and car journeys, for starters.
