Conference of Mayors resolution urges fossil fuel divestiture

By Paul J. Gough – Reporter, Pittsburgh Business Times, Jul 1, 2020

Mayor Bill Peduto is one of 16 cosponsoring a resolution from the U.S. Conference on Mayors urging cities to divest themselves from investments in fossil fuels and support greener options.

Peduto is a member of the conference's Climate Mayors Steering Committee to promote climate action, and he's been a vocal supporter of action on climate and sustainability throughout his tenure. He stirred controversy last fall during a speech by saying that he didn't support further petrochemical development in the region.

The resolution, which also includes New York City, Berkeley, California, and New Orleans, among others, asks cities around the world to divest from fossil fuels and invest in "climate solutions to support a green recovery and a just transition."

Peduto last year asked the Comprehensive Municipal Pension Board to divest Pittsburgh's pensions fund from fossil fuels and a subcommittee is studying divestiture.
