4C NEWSLETTER SEPT.2013-JAN.2014

Amsterdam, 10 January, 2014

Dear friends,

Apologies for the three month gap since our last newsletter. On the one hand, health issues have put a dent in our activities since September. On the other, the climate news has often been too discouraging to write about. Both problems seem to be diminishing, though not as rapidly as we might hope.

We’ve put together a categorized list of the important stories of the fall and early winter in our Breaking News section. Here are the main lines.

• The negotiations track. While the corporate growth mania, together with the buildup of greenhouse gases it fosters, continued unabated, the results of November’s climate talks in Warsaw were not quite as bad as feared. For most of the the UN’s 19th Conference of the Parties (to its Climate change Convention), its participants feared nothing at all would result. In fact, thanks to its climate-skeptical Polish government host, it was accompanied by a meeting of international coal companies in Warsaw during its second week. The ambience was so poor that many of the developing countries’ delegations and environmental groups sympathetic to their plight left the conference in disgust on November 20-21. Nonetheless, the conference ended with modest progress, both in the promised compensation for loss and damage inflicted by climate change on undeveloped and developing countries and in the preparations for the all-important Paris conference in 2015, where country-specific targets for reduction of greenhouse gases are to be presented and discussed. [See list I below.]

• Renewables. There are also encouraging reports of advances in the production, availability and transmission of wind and solar power [II below].

• Protests. There is a growing movement against carbon- powered energy (especially coal, but also against the Keystone XL pipeline) [III below].

• Global warming worsens global poverty. There is increasing awareness that the burdens of fossil fuel use and of climate change fall most heavily on poor nations and indigenous peoples [IV below].

• Extreme weather. Impacts of extreme weather on ever-larger populations – storms, droughts, killer heat waves, even the current U.S. deep freeze (see our posting on January 8) – are becoming clearer. Population groups like those in the U.S. Midwest, which until this year were climate skeptical, are being convinced by prolonged drought that something is very wrong and needs to be fixed; governments that have seen major population areas flooded, (China and the Philippines for example) are also more eager to take action. [V below].

• Science warns. Nonetheless, the improved response to the oncoming disaster is for some climate scientists simply too little and too late, and the warnings from the scientific community have become ever sharper [VI below].

Let’s look in detail at our Breaking News reports for September-December 2013 and for the first week of 2014 broken up into these six large rubrics.

We'll try not to let so much time elapse before our next newsletter.

Warm regards from Amsterdam,

Arthur Mitzman, coordinator, Concerned Citizens against Climate Change
P.S. Our petition and newsletters are a way of enlarging citizen power and knowledge about climate change in the forty plus countries where the appeal has been signed and the letters received. Send this on to your friends and ask them to sign the appeal at http://www.stopwarming.eu/?petition.
